When I was finally offered safe and stable housing, it felt like a lifeline. I was given not only a roof over my head but also practical support such as a bed, bedding, and basic kitchen equipment so I could immediately feel at home and able to take care of myself.

The community offers so much more than just housing. Weekly social gatherings with morning tea and lunch, access to donated food and goods, and the generosity of volunteers who help with gardening, maintenance, and ongoing support all make a huge difference. Their kindness took the desperation out of my situation and gave me back a sense of dignity and belonging.

This organisation is genuine, compassionate, caring, and selfless. They truly are what we call in Australia “one in a million.”

I was alone, desperate, and homeless. I even attempted suicide because I had simply had enough of life. I spent three weeks in a mental health unit, hiding the reality of what was happening from everyone around me.

After years of moving between my car and the occasional family member’s home, I was finally offered a safe place to live. For the first time in a long time, I could just rest. I remember sleeping for days at the beginning, because I finally felt safe. I had somewhere I could make a meal, take a proper shower, and simply breathe.

Over time, I got to know the people who shared the same space — not their stories, not their struggles, but enough to say good morning, to feel seen, and to know I wasn’t judged. We are all here for similar reasons, and there is comfort in that shared understanding.

Living here gave me strength. I received counselling to help me work through my struggles. I had a bed to sleep in, stability, and somewhere to truly call home again. About three months after settling in, I found work — and I’m still working at the same job today. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.

But it wasn’t just the housing that changed my life — it was the support, the time to rest, and the community around me. The people I live alongside are no longer just neighbours; they’ve become my mates, my friends, almost like family.

This home gave me the chance to rebuild my life. From sleeping in my car to having a safe place to rest. From loneliness to friendships. From unemployment to meaningful work.
